The statistical validation for 1st pitch strikes is irrefutable... 92.7% of first pitch strikes lead to an out or strike one; so that means that less than 8% of first pitch strikes become hits. 69% of strikeouts start with first pitch strikes. MORE: WeinsteinBaseball.com/Strikes
@JWonCATCHING In high school we had a coach who would ask “what’s the single best pitch you can throw?” The correct answer was always “Strike One, coach.”
@JWonCATCHING @LawCoBaseball18 I think this means for coaches to stop telling batters to take the first pitch.
@JWonCATCHING Seems kind of at odds with this 2016 MLB data? Batting average is 347 on first pitches, but less than 8% of first pitch strikes become hits? Probably a way to see this data differently, just curious how all that fits together.
@JWonCATCHING Most important pitch without a doubt is the 1-1 pitch. To say otherwise is foolish. It is the difference of 1-2 & 2-1.
@JWonCATCHING Essential for hitters to understand this as much as it is for pitchers
@JWonCATCHING We have known this statistic in professional baseball for decades and yet pitchers shy away from pitching to contact on strike one
@JWonCATCHING @AlexWilson104 first pitch strike is an essential part of winning a baseball game.
@JWonCATCHING Question #2 What are statistics on Pitcher throwing a strike following a 3-0 count, another time that the bat/swing is taken away by coaching? Maybe pitchers are more comfortable throwing it down the middle when they know there not going to get punched back. Interesting thought
@JWonCATCHING Question- is it because most hitters are programmed/coached/told to take first pitch?
@JWonCATCHING I’m conflicted then as a HS Coach with the new pitch count rules...I tell my guys to take on first pitch to help with getting pitch count up. But with stats like these I may do better giving them the green light. Thoughts anyone?
@JWonCATCHING From 2015-2017 AL batting avg is 0.345 on a 0-0 count. So I’m not sure I am interpreting your stat correctly?
@JWonCATCHING So, on the flip side, why aren't more hitters aggressive if they see a 1st pitch they like?
@JWonCATCHING Preach it everyday at practice. Easiest way to succeed is to get ahead. Put the hitter on defensive mode immediately.
@JWonCATCHING what percentage first pitch strikes lead to outs? Do you have that information?
@JWonCATCHING I just showed this to several of my kids... first pitch ready!
@JWonCATCHING @DraftProspectus Wouldn’t 100% of first pitch strikes lead to strike one?
@JWonCATCHING What type of hits result from the 8% that are hits? What percentage of second pitches turns into a hit? Same question for other pitches in at bats.
@JWonCATCHING You should follow this guy.......you'll love it! @miller_morrison @tengel347
@JWonCATCHING Why I LOVE the GameChanger app. My 15 y.o last outing FPS% 94. FPSO% was only 55%. Somebody forgot the put away plans their pitching coach spent so much time drilling into his head. Lesson learned!
@JWonCATCHING Curious, what is the batting average of MLB players who swing at the first pitch? There was one year I heard a stat for Altuve hitting well north of .400 on first pitches he swung at! 😳
@JWonCATCHING @floydou1 Statistical validation of “just throw strikes!”
