Queen Elizabeth's Hunting Lodge, Epping Forest. Built in 1543 for King Henry VIII and renovated by order of Queen Elizabeth I. Visiting is free look for the mysterious marks left by the carpenters who built the Lodge nearly 500 years ago.

31 May 1578 Martin Frobisher sailed to Canada. Over time he brought home 1500 tons of 'gold ore'. It was merely worthless iron pyrite (fool's gold) later used to pave streets in London, leading to the myth that the streets of London were paved with gold.

16 January 2013, an Agusta A109 helicopter crashed in Vauxhall, London, after it collided with the jib of a construction crane attached to St George Wharf Tower. Two people died in the incident: the pilot, Pete Barnes, and a pedestrian, Matthew Wood.

Veglio's Cafe, established 1854, the sign hidden for over a hundred years until the building next door was demolished to make way for the new Crossrail Station on Oxford Street. After the re-building and this uncovering, the sign has now been lost forever!

Original typefoundry established by William Caslon, in Chiswell Street, 1737 - 1909. It stood near this site called Longbow House, commemorated by an LCC blue plaque, initially on an office block near the site and moved to a new building after demolition.

London's oldest surviving outdoor statue is a statue in Trinity Church Square, of King Alfred the Great. The lower portion is from a Roman statue from the 2nd century AD, while the upper portion is an 18th or early 19th-century Coade stone addition.

Then & Now: Old Waterloo Bridge, Embankment, 1900. Originally Strand Bridge, built 1811 - 1817, by 1900, showing significant structural damage from river. By 1920, the damage to its foundations had worsened, leading to demolition and this new replacement.

Then & Now: St Mary Magdalene, Rowington Close, W2, 1959. Built in 1872, a fire destroyed the brand new roof so the first Mass in the new building could not be celebrated until St Mary Magdalene's Day, 22 July 1873. Featured in the 1968 film Secret Ceremony.

All Aboard the 15A bus 1921. The route was from Ladbroke Grove to Barking on weekdays. Bus history occurred in 1925 when the first covered, double-decker bus began operation. Before this, the upper deck of buses was open to the elements.

Sunlight Laundry of Fulham, filling up with gas near Hyde Park Corner. The roof of the van is the gas tank, which looks rather cumbersome for such a small van. I wonder what was the mileage for a full tank?
