Great to see the analysis by the USDA and folks involved in the cattle outbreaks. Genomic analysis and epidemiological investigation showed a reassortment event in wild bird populations preceded a single wild bird-to-cattle transmission episode. 👉biorxiv.org/content/10.110…
Excellent work from our Penn-CEIRR USDA colleagues supporting single wild bird-->cattle introduction of H5. Spread within cattle likely due to movement of asymptomatic animals and identification of adaptive mutations that might increase transmission. biorxiv.org/content/10.110…
Good to see this published. HPAI viruses from Uruaguay suggest pinnipeds ancestral to birds. Viruses in South America may have spread from mammals to mammals and seabirds, revealing a new transmission route. Big implications! 👉academic.oup.com/ve/advance-art…

Due to enormous and collaborative effort from the @nextstrain team, @hamesjadfield @trvrb and of course @USDA , we now have the USDA cattle sequences on Nextstrain: nextstrain.org/avian-flu/h5n1… visualized with new, 2-year builds.

Congrats to lab member Karen Hanze Villavicencio for being named the 2024 @AmerPedSociety RAPID scholar in Pediatric Infectious Diseases! Karen is a @CHOP_ID fellow using #metagenomics to understand pneumonia etiology and outcomes in children from Africa.
So, *preliminary* molecular clock analyses indicate that the time of the most recent common ancestor (TMRCA) of the US cattle flu clade was late December. TMRCA of that clade and the closest relatives in birds, mid-December. If single intro, likely between those rough dates.

Apologies if I sound harsh in my comment about H5N1 public genomic data. It is such an important global question and now it is weeks and weeks of mention of widespread cases in mammals in the USA and data not public. Public data is the cornerstone of public health response.
