Let’s dive into the phases of #TheTadpoleExperiment: 🔬🐸 In Phase 1 (May), we monitor tadpole growth under a magnetic field of 9 nT (nanotesla)—the most extreme condition our chamber can handle. Why? To push the boundaries of what we know about biological responses in very weak…
Yay! TheTadpoleExperiment.org is live, delving into the intriguing effects of magnetic fields on life. Over the next 3 mo, we will test the effects of varying magnetic fields on the biological development of tadpoles and zebrafish. #TheTadpoleExperiment #OpenScience
Our monthly introspection event is tonight at 6-7pm ET on Zoom! This time we'll be applying introspection to a specific topic; radiation risk. We'll also take a next step in learning introspection by beginning to investigate goals. DM for the link!

Can a small organization accomplish a lot while both doing extensive planning and reporting? The answer is yes, if you make them part of how you do your work. Produce while you plan, learn while you speak to your audiences. leverageresearch.substack.com/p/leverage-wee…
Two years ago, we launched Bismarck Brief. Since then, our analysts have written half a million words on the state of technology, the U.S. government, Chinese industry, and the world. Here are the 9 most important things we learned about how the world works in 2023. 🧵THREAD:
Happy New Year! This month we're going to focus on our Bottlenecks program and the conference we just ran in Tokyo/Fukushima, Bottlenecks 2023. The tl;dr on it is: Science and technology can go much faster, but first we have to stop being wrong about what the bottlenecks are.
At the request of one of our donors, here's a document analyzing Leverage's evidence of expected impact: docs.google.com/document/d/1ja… Enjoy, and happy holidays from your friends at Leverage!
Give power to the people by giving them knowledge.

GOD DAMN I WISH I HAD BEEN INVOLVED WITH LEVERAGE RESEARCH (i am projecting)
"True political science has been achieved internally." - @SamoBurja
I've always found Leverage's introspection stuff pretty interesting so I'm excited they're doing more workshops on it again. If you're interested in self reflection and introspection, hopefully see you there!
Want to learn more about Leverage's Introspection research? We're hosting a monthly workshop where we teach people how to access their underlying beliefs. The first workshop will be 6-7pm ET on Monday Feb 19. Attendance is open, though feel free to DM for more details!
Hey @LeverageRes, I found the last newsletter on aspiring leaders interesting. I'm curious to what extent you expect to help people *get to* interest and ability in responsibly impacting science/tech vs creating content for people who already have solid plans in relevant areas?
Two years ago, we launched Bismarck Brief. Since then, our analysts have written half a million words on the state of technology, the U.S. government, Chinese industry, and the world. Here are the 9 most important things we learned about how the world works in 2023. 🧵THREAD:
People of San Francisco! This spring (1-3 March), @jasoncbenn and I will be hosting the HammingBio Symposium, an unconference to delve into important, tractable, and neglected problems in bio. We are actively recruiting participants and experts! bio.neighborhoodsf.com
I made an org chart of the de facto U.S. government circa 2023:
"The elite" is not shadowy or mysterious. America is ruled by technocratic lanky GenX Ivy League white guys who fly under the radar because they are powerful. For example, pictured below are the American foreign minister, information minister, and AI minister.
@LeverageRes would love larger (or maybe just more readable) text, I'm trying to move quickly back and forth around the diagram and keep getting slowed down by having to squint or zoom in
Interesting thread. I am suspecting cash flow problems more and more.
Here's some real-time analysis of the OpenAI / Sam Altman firing situation. It's important to understand what's actually happening in order to be able to make informed decisions about the AI landscape. 👇
A deliberative review process by a group of patriots led by Brutus and Casca concluded that he was not consistently candid in his communications with the Senate,
@LeverageRes It happened quickly, so probably not "disagreement over direction of [something]", would have been more signals Something personal conduct related would show up as a surprise like this
This is great. Understanding who discovered what when, and how, is very important for the tracking of value. If you want to know how to produce value, you have to study how value is produced.
@geoffanders Yes, Leibniz developed in the 17th century an algebra of logic that very recently (in the 21st century) was proved to be a fragment of Boolean algebra - which he developed to prove all Aristotelian categorical syllogisms. Details here: researchgate.net/publication/37…
@LeverageRes Is the idea to raise money from 20 sources for 1 project, or to raise money from 20 sources for 20 projects? I understood your tweet to be saying the latter. Is it saying the former?
@LeverageRes I don't think it's just because of ease, but also effectiveness. It's generally thought that focus on a few larger projects will be more efficient, with larger impacts, than many small projects.
1/7: Today we released AIPI’s first poll with YouGov. The results are overwhelming. 82% think we should go slowly and deliberately with AI, while just 8% want to speed up development. 83% believe AI could cause a catastrophic event.
I might almost be time for me to write my take on Leverage Research. I seem to have a pretty different perspective than most, maybe because I have close to zero ill will toward anyone involved
