It’s “You Are the Teacher” week! This end of year project gives our MLLs a chance to shine & showcase just how much knowledge they bring to @BayridgePS_LDSB! Reminding us that teaching & learning is a two-way street. I’m proud to learn from my students this week and always!
It’s all about the vowels!
Vowel intensives draw our attention to the small differences in mouth positions between vowel sounds. Using our @IMSEOG visuals, gestures, & focusing on articulation to support students in building fluency & developing mastery with short vowel sounds!
Sound walls help MLLs see & spell sounds!
They display all the phonemes in English & support students in learning the sound-symbol correspondence! Focusing on articulatory gestures gives learners a tangible, visible representation to hold onto long after a sound fades!
Ss love using our alphabet reveal strips to practice LNF, a predictor of future reading success, in combination w their learning of the alphabetic principle!
Extend this activity by challenging Ss to consider alphabetical order using positional vocab like 'before' & 'after'!
Happy Halloween and Happy Diwali to everyone celebrating!
We used the picture word inductive model to learn more about each celebration! Ss labeled and explored new vocabulary, engaged in structured conversations, unscrambled sentences & so much more! What a great day!
Children learn their 1st language by communicating w real people in real situations-The same applies for Ss learning another language!
Today’s authentic conversation utilized language frames from #LexiaEnglish to practice OL skills like describing & asking + answering questions
Years ago it was common to water down instruction for Multilingual Learners. Now we know how important it is to amplify the language by turning up the listening, speaking, reading, and writing that students do using the grade level standards and academic vocabulary.…
Any time invested in oral language has exponential returns in reading!
This is why we dedicate lots of time to explicit and intentional speaking practice! Today, we used a wordless picture book & sentence stems to practice OL, basic and academic vocabulary, & speaking fluency!
Family Literacy Night was a HUGE success! Thank you to our families and SAC for coming, and for Mrs. Huntley, Ms. Hamilton, Mrs. Collins, and Mrs. Swan for organizing! 📖 ✏️
Bears-If you don’t want your solar eclipse glasses as a souvenir, please consider returning them to school to be reused in Latin America! #globalrecycling#epicday
It is a very exciting time of year for many Bears who are celebrating Ramadan! Here is an amazing note that one of my students wrote to me, with their family, to share more about Ramadan!
“Literacy instruction goes hand in hand with language.”
@LimestoneESL is enjoying digging into @DrElsa_CHagan’s Literacy Foundations for English Learners! 📚
You don’t have to know a child’s first language in order to use it in the classroom. Using a child’s first language doesn’t stifle their development of additional languages. Languages build upon one another. 🙌🏽
