Today we read @mattdelapena’s gorgeous book LOVE and we talked about the ways we saw ourselves reflected in the story and what that helped us to understand. The kids shared such brave and difficult truths and we grew in so many ways. They were simply incredible.
We began our study of grammar today with a dramatic reading of Elephant and Piggie’s TODAY I WILL FLY. Mo Willems helped us to study how writers use subjects and verbs to build sentences. The kids had SUCH a great time!
As writers, we’ve looked at how the stories writers tell can reveal important things about who they are. Today, we started to think about the important things about us that we want the world to know.
Today students began to think about how the books we read can act as mirrors and windows based on the work of Dr. Rudine Sims Bishop. This will lead us to explore purposes for reading and how we can grow as readers and humans.
Sometimes, your kids love a picture book so much that they ask you to read it again. And then sometimes your principal, @GoMBStars, walks in and the kids ask HIM to read it a third time. And he does. And it is wonderful.
Practicing the process we will use as we read to set student-written reading goal. We are learning to pay attention to our thinking and to follow lines of inquiry that interest as readers as we read throughout a text.
Learning to read stories as a way to learn about our world. Began with some close reading of stories from Humans of New York. I am in awe of the deep thinking these kids are already jumping into!
Students created identity webs today and shared their webs with classmates. They learned to look for points of connection and to ask questions about identity respectfully. Incredibly powerful conversations were had. @SaraKAhmed
Students are settling in as readers and I am learning so much about their reading identities. There is so much positive energy around books and reading from these kids. It’s going to be such a great year!
We also began to think about identity. This will help us to begin to build our classroom community and help us better understand how who we are affects us as readers and writers and our experiences in this world.
Another incredible day of learning. Today we built LEGO boats to practice working together and sharing ideas and finding roles in our groups that work for who we are. We also began to dig into our classroom library and build lists of books we want to read.
Our first group challenge was to use a basket of random supplies to create something that served a purpose in the world. Students worked together to brainstorm, design and build one creation as a group. What a great first day!! These kids are incredible!!
Today is the first day of our new school year! We cannot wait to get started!! The room is ready and waiting to be filled up with your brilliance and to help you build a community of learning!!
After learning how books can either reinforce or push us beyond stereotypes, students set out to analyze picture books in our classroom library to find ones that do both. This allowed them the chance to practice reading critically so they can make better choices as readers.
In the whole world there is only 14,000 drugs rehabs. In 2018, 47,000 people started to do drugs and just about none of them could go to a rehab because there was not any close to them. After learning about the dangers of drugs here is what I want to do.

We discovered a problem with illegal immigration and detention centers. The main problem in the detention centers is the terrible conditions and no one is doing anything to stop this problem. Read this report to find out our solution to this problem.
