So no shit, there I was... sleeping on top of my truck in the middle of the Afghan desert wearing full kit. Best sleep I ever had. Pitch black, beautiful stars, crisp night... I think about that sleep often, now that I have kids

HUGE win this week on something that took months to coordinate. We got initial funding for our project based on a very quick pivot and convincing folks that this was the right strategy across four organizations. Feels damn good to get a W!

Important concept here. In the Army, we use Measures of Performance (MOPs/KPIs) and Measures of Effectiveness (MOEs). MOPs = Are we doing things right? MOEs = Are we doing the right things? No point in measuring something that doesn't matter.

This is so important. It feels like half of the mentorship sessions that I've done with young officers have been around this concept. 1. What is your vision/goal? 2. What are the "lines of effort" involved? 3. What are the actionable steps to get there? 4. Iterate.

I could write a book on why leasing is a great option for the govt given the pain of appropriating capital improvements for owned property. If they lease a good property, then they will always pay the rent and will never leave.

Video aside, this speaks to an important leadership philosophy: Leaders place themselves at the point of greatest friction. It is a lesson that I learned in combat and the best way to answer: "What should I be doing right now?" Just ask: "Where is the friction going to be?"
