Did you know that some species of female dragonflies tend to play dead when they want to avoid unwanted mating? They will stop mid-flight, and go crashing to the floor. Then, the dragonflies stay absolutely still. @PurdueSciComm @PurdueInsects #dragonfly #flight

Dragonflies were way bigger in the past compared to the present. Scientists decided to conduct research on these cool insects to see how large they could get with oxygen levels from 300 million years ago. The dragonflies were 15% larger. @PurdueSciComm @PurdueInsects #dragonfly

Did you know that a certain species of dragonfly holds the record for the longest migration of an insect? They are called Pantala flavescens, a.k.a globe skimmer dragonfly, and they migrate across the Indian Ocean. So small, but so tough. @PurdueSciComm @PurdueAg #dragonfly

Fun fact: A dragonfly wing color could be dependent on the climate. Dragonflies in colder areas tend to have darker colors while dragonflies in warmer areas would have less. Darker wings would help capture more heat from the sun. @PurdueSciComm @PurdueInsects #color #dragonfly

Hoverflies have a ‘spurious vein’ that is very unique to the species. This vein doesn’t connect with any other veins on the wing! There is only one species out of all 6,000 of hoverflies that does not have this vein! #entomology #purdue #neato

Fun fact: most adult hoverflies live for only 12 days! One specific species, Hammerschmidtia ferruginea, can live for up to 55 days! There are over 6,000 different hoverfly species, and they each have different life spans! #entomology #howcool
