@TOAdamVaughan Canada needs to think very hard about whether or not this is the road it wants to go down. Liberal fatigue is no excuse when the warning signs are there. Go down this road, and there might not be a way back.
This shouldn’t have to be said. Protest the government. Don’t protest personal homes and intimidate families.
Here’s the deal @LoblawsON; no idea if you got a building permit for this or not, nor how it was reviewed and approved if so. But here’s my unofficial take: see that exit sign? If it’s dark, lights are out, room getting smoky, seeing that sign would save my life. 1/
Never forget, a 13-year study found that protected bike-lanes led to a drastic decline in fatalities for all road users. ALL ROAD USERS. And painted bike-lanes? No safety improvement at all. For sharrows, it’s safer to NOT have them. Via @StreetsblogUSA usa.streetsblog.org/2019/05/29/pro…
Brent Toderian is "a nationally and internationally respected thought-leader on cities and city-building." I love Ottawa and want it to be better. When he muses about cities not meeting their potential and our city is the first one that he mentions, it says something.

@BrentToderian Thanks Brent. We really appreciate your saying this. I've lived for decades in both Vancouver and Ottawa. Someone with your wide experience of urban planning, drawing attention to Ottawa's hide bound city administration, must count for something.
QUESTION: We often talk about cities doing great things that inspire us, and I usually don’t spend much time bashing other cities even when they deserve it. But there are special cities that just SHOULD BE SO MUCH BETTER than they are. Ottawa comes to mind for me. What yours?
So much better

@RogerMoss167583 We’re sort of seeing it in real time with the amazing changes happening in Toronto, Montreal and though it’s across the pond, Paris as well.
A hero to me is a man who was terrorized by police, beaten by police, charged with murder by police, held for bail, attacked by the Mayor and the Premier for being released, besieged by an unsympathetic press and prosecuted on no theory who still thanks Canada for his freedom.
DONATE at once
This is a great article. Glad it mentions the need for bus lanes on Bank Street. The 6 is consistently among the most late and cancelled buses in Ottawa. Such an important bus that so many people rely on shouldn’t be stuck in traffic.

Drivers of lifted pickups stop at a red light without occupying the crosswalk challenge (impossible)
Seeing as this is the first time the Speaker actually did this, it’s clearly not “every issue.”
When dealing with adolescents, it’s best to pick your spots. Not every issue has to be turned into a test of your authority. Poilievre looked small, both in the language he used and his grudging withdrawal of it. But he did withdraw. Speaker should have taken the W.
It’s wild watching people circle the rabbit hole. No, it’s not acceptable to call the Prime Minister of Canada a whacko in the House. No, that’s not the Leader of the Official Opposition’s job.
Today is the day—Speaker Fergus finally had enough of the right wing radical in charge of the CPC.
We should treat drug use as a health issue. Decrim does just that by removing barriers between a person struggling with substance use and the treatment they need. We have spent decades fighting a failed war on drugs. If anything is wacko, it's doubling down on failed policies.
Pierre Poilievre called Prime Minister Trudeau a “wacko”. Any journalist who pretends that’s within the rules of the House of Commons is incompetent or lying.
We realize that after US elections American support for Ukraine may be more precarious. To prevent the worst scenario, we should go ahead and mobilise russian assets that Western countries froze. It’s fair and logical.
Ottawa: We Cater to the Easily Impressed.
It’s unimportant to me whether this is true—but if it is, good on Toronto: every city should seek to be livable. If tourists like it too, fine. But catering to tourists seems a surefire way to make sure it’s interesting to neither them nor the people that live there.
I'm watching @ProgressAlberta as they livetweet the EBSB discussion around bringing back school resource officers and like... how are they not talking about using that money to hire (more) school counsellors. We're certified teachers with counselling psych master's degrees. (1/n)
@adamgoldenberg Like Trump, Poilievre is telling us exactly what he would do as Prime Minister. He would trample upon the rights and freedoms of whichever group raised his ire. Be forewarned, Canada.
"”I will be the democratically elected prime minister, democratically accountable to the people and they can then make the judgments themselves on whether they think my laws are constitutional,’ Poilievre said in his speech on Monday.” If PM PP permits another election, that is.
@TOAdamVaughan Canada needs to think very hard about whether or not this is the road it wants to go down. Liberal fatigue is no excuse when the warning signs are there. Go down this road, and there might not be a way back.
Funnelling in 9-5 commuters will not make downtown better or more economically productive. Turning it into a mixed-use neighbourhood with local residents would - convert offices into housing. “Federal public servants to the office 3 days a week this fall” cbc.ca/news/canada/ot…
Contrary to Ford's outdated perspective, the commute from the suburbs model leaves the downtown area a ghost town after 5:30, supplicating the whiniest businesses that cater to lunch. Want a thriving downtown? Invest in making it an area worth coming to. cbc.ca/news/canada/ot…
Dear Mr. Housefather M.P.: You were an invited guest on As It Happens. You're a Member of Parliament! What gave you the idea you can scream and yell at Nil Köksal for simply doing her job? And doing it extremely well and professionally as she ALWAYS does unlike you tonight, sir
‘’ Essentially, it would be the straw that'll break the camel's back and lead to eventually the denigration of the Charter as a whole," … Annnnd, there’s the plan. Cons have always hated the Charter.
Conservative leader @PierrePoilievre refers to legislation under a government he may form as "my laws". Not Parliament's laws, but HIS laws. I find that troubling. Would Cdn laws then, be based on his personal desires and dislikes? #cdnpoli cbc.ca/news/politics/…
Ottawa’s downtown can be more than office buildings & barren streets that cater to 9-5 commuters. It can be a vibrant community with mixed-use buildings and people-focused streets. The nature of work has changed, so should our city. We just need the leadership to make it happen
@RogerMoss167583 @MountCascade In Ottawa, the single tracking north of South Keys prevents it from being the best, but it's at least thought about.
@Lingman Still exaggeration. You're implying Ottawa is unique. It isn't.
