AI is being used right now to decide who to hire, who to fire, who gets a loan, who stays in the hospital and who gets sent home. I am much more worried about those current, real-life uses of AI than potential downstream existential threats.

We should support each other more. This paper shows we don’t give emotional & social support to people in need since we don’t think we are qualified. But we underestimate how much our simple expressions of empathy & compassion make a difference to folks! pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/35802611/

I always find it funny when universities publish their desire to recruit and retain students and faculty, but never staff. What gives? Who recruits those students? Who helps them learn systems, advises them, mentors from day 1? Who aids them in making the trans HS to college?
