Ontario is about to mass infect its kids with COVID. It is blowing my mind we are choosing this route now, when so many kids are unprotected and when we have vaccines to protect them. The peak of the highest wave in the pandemic is not the time to return to school. It is immoral.
At least we now all agree that there is extremely limited ICU capacity due to staffing constraints.
There is not enough military personnel to staff even a fraction of the 600-1100 beds which only exist in newspaper reports & @ONgov websites.

I don't know if we'll all get Omicron. We might eventually. But I'm less worried about that than all of us getting it around the same time. That's when theoretical risk of strain to healthcare capacity becomes real. That is certainly avoidable. 13/
I listened to the CMOH interview on @metromorning today
The idea that we can staff 2400 ICU beds & scale up by another 500 is absurd.
Reality:
We rarely exceeded 2000 ICU patients during the worst days of W3 & have fewer staff now due to attrition/isolation/burnout than before.
Let's get one thing straight: The Ontario government's decision to shorten the COVID-19 isolation period to 5 days without also providing workers with free N95 masks, rapid tests & adequate paid sick days is a business decision, not a public health decision.
I am making public the letter I sent to @TOPublicHealth today, asking for school intervention.
It's a targeted ask to recognize the risk to 1.1 million wholly unvaccinated children in Ontario next week.
It's not the only need, but it's the scariest.

Ontario schools won't be safe to open right now while:
- Omicron continues to rip thru like a hot knife in butter
- Key upgrades to ventilation, masks for all still absent
- vaccination gaps persist
- testing capacity broken
Hope can't deliver #SafeSchools
Strange how Ontario's approach to COVID is allowing 10,000 people to go to the Raptors game tonight while hospitalizations & ICU admissions are on the rise, LTC facilities are in outbreak and we are seriously considering closing schools.
Cancelled my Christmas party this weekend at the last minute out of an abundance of caution.
At least one would-be guest has tested positive today. One superspreader event avoided.

Thank goodness @AlgomaHealth added hundreds of new appts this week, and has its own booking system.❤️ Sorry to hear of the challenges others are enduring, however, across ON.

If @ONgov is serious about schools being 1st to open/last to close, start planning now.
-#COVIDisAirborne PPE for teachers/staff
-3 shots for teachers/staff
-upgrade ventilation as much as possible
-focused effort to get kids vax’d
-rapid “test to stay”
-routine RAT surveillance
Nurses are done. We won't be coming out of retirement for this wave or working extra in vaccination clinics for boosters. As if. We are done giving. Hang in Ontario ..as there may be an ICU bed available.. but not a critical care NURSE. Hospitals rarely run out of furniture.
The numbers are daunting but each person can adjust their behaviour to blunt the Omicron wave:
-Upgrade your mask to a respirator.
-Get shot #1/2/3 and #1/2 for 5-11
-Minimize contacts
-Rapid test before small gatherings
Support each other.
With daily case numbers expected to exceed 50% capacity of our largest indoor sports venues, adult entertainment is being prioritized over access to healthcare and children’s fundamental need for in-person education.
