Found 4 Wood Whites today at Hooken Undercliff between Beer and Branscombe, Devon, conditions weren't ideal as it was often cloudy and a bit cold as I made my way along the footpath but it meant the Wood Whites weren't flying so I could photograph them close up.

Went hunting for Berkshire's elusive Duke of Burgundy butterflies yesterday. Visited a couple of sites first, found nothing then paid a visit to Crog Hill. Bingo, 4 Duke of Burgundy. Photos of three of them. Bonus, loads of Small Blue as well.

First Small Heath butterfly of the year in a new location as well according to iRecord, on Oxford Preservation land to the east of Signal Hill, near Boar's Hill, Oxfordshire. In fact I saw two, fluttering low over the grass. The 3rd record for Berkshire this year.

It was Holly Blue day in Headington today. Photos are of a couple of females seen in my garden. While watching the HB's, a male suddenly appeared to mate with the female on the left. It took no more than 5-10 seconds. First time I have seen HB's mating.

Was out walking today and found Toothwort (Lathraea Squamaria), pretty rare in Oxfordshire according to iRecord. It is a flowering parasite, living off trees such as Hazel, Elm, Beech and Lime. Never seen it before so a pleasant bonus to a wet and windy walk.

My first butterfly of 2024, a Brimstone, seen 24 January, at Lye Valley, Oxford. Just checked iRecord, first one in Oxfordshire for 2024. First January sighting at Lye Valley ever recorded as well.
