What a great weekend to be a sports fan. MLB, NHL, NBA, NASCAR, and, of course... The Masters. And we can play retro sports games repping each of these sports. We can even go to Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12: The Masters on PS3/X360/Wii.

HangTime is perhaps the most refined of the Midway arcade hoops games. JAM got the ball rolling, Tournament Edition added some tweaks, then HangTime was a significant next step… with double-dunks and alley-oops headlining a host of improvements

The best of the NES golf games. Multiple courses, stat tracking, battery backup, decent visuals & sound, and pretty good (if a touch difficult) play controls. Sadly, Nintendo got away from making its own golf games until Mario Golf years later.

The last of the NBA 2K games for the Dreamcast… and the first for the other Gen6 consoles. While some will argue that the original NBA 2K is the beginning of the dynasty, I would point to 2K2 because it was the first game widely available to all platforms.

Answers will understandably vary here. There are some great ones to consider, from ESPN NFL 2K5 to MVP Baseball 2005 to Tecmo Super Bowl to NHL ‘94 to NBA JAM… and more. Sports video games have always been & continue to be a force.

Konami had many bases covered (pun intended) when it came to sports games in the fifth generation of consoles. Three of these first four games carried licenses. NBA In The Zone was the key standout. Bottom of the 9th wasn’t that far behind. NFL Full Contact was… not great.

Daytona USA remains such an accessible racing game. It’s fun, too. I have always thought it a shame that later games in the series never made it home like the original did.

We did get Chris Berman and Tom Jackson in one video game together: Konami’s ESPN NFL PrimeTime 2002 (PS2/Xbox). Berman handled play-by-play duties while TJ delivered analysis.

Easy to pick-up-and-play. A few dominant players (Bo Jackson, notably). Love the music. Tecmo Super Bowl is better in pretty much every respect, but Tecmo Bowl is how it started.

Still perhaps the best volleyball video game out there. Kings of the Beach and Beach Spikers are in the conversation, but Super Spike V’Ball here gets my vote.

This pair of sports video games turns 20 years old here in North America today. Baseball Advance is one of the GBA’s premier baseball games. Smash Court Tennis Pro Tournament sadly gets overlooked in the faces of Virtua Tennis and Top Spin.

It’s time for NBA JAM to get the recognition it deserves. It kickstarted the arcade sports video game scene, generating sequels & games covering different sports… plus it attracted a wider audience to playing video games. It belongs in the World Video Game Hall of Fame.
