OTD 1976 Frank Sinatra orchestrated a rather forced and uncomfortable onstage reunion between Dean Martin & Jerry Lewis on the MDA Telethon in #LasVegas. It would take another 10 years before they had a more lasting reconciliation.
Had a great stay at @PlazaLasVegas this week. Folks looking for value might check 1 Main Street. Didn't win a lot of money but vacationing in #LasVegas is certainly a win in my book.

OTD 1970 the Coin Castle opened in Downtown #LasVegas . The address had previously been the Northern Club & Monte Carlo. It would eventually become La Bayou and then incorporated into the @GoldenGateVegas . The King now resides at the @NeonMuseum .
OTD 1951 Frank Sinatra made his #LasVegas debut at the Desert Inn Hotel. He'd return for another engagement before heading to the Sands. He wasn't a big draw at the time with a half empty showroom. Marquee 📷 @summacorp
OTD 1953 #LasVegas made an expensive attempt at thoroughbred horse racing with Las Vegas Park racetrack. Only 13 days of racing at the $4 million venue. After brief forays with Quarter Horse racing in 1954 and auto racing in 1954 and 55, Las Vegas Park was closed & demolished.
OTD 1954 the Showboat, the first* resort within #LasVegas city limits opened. After a few years it became successful as a "locals" casino, with inexpensive food & other promotions. "The Boat" was successful until the 90s. It became the Castaways in 2000 & closed in 2004.
I'm in Downtown #LasVegas and just checked into the @PlazaLasVegas . The lobby certainly looks different than it did when they opened back in 1971.
OTD 1948 the Thunderbird Hotel & Casino became the 4th resort on the #LasVegas Strip. At opening the hotel boasted 79 rooms. It became the Silver Bird in 1977, the El Rancho in 1982 and now @fblasvegas
OTD 1987 The Park Hotel & Casino opened in Downtown #LasVegas . It was formally the Holiday International. The hotel would close in 1990 when Bob Snow bought it. It would reopen in 1991 as the first Main Street Station.

OTD 1982 the El Rancho Hotel and Casino opens on the #LasVegas Strip. Ed Torres purchased the shuttered Silverbird Hotel for $25 million and spent another $25m in renovations. It closed in July 1992 and is now the site of @fblasvegas .
