"Every VC-Backed IPO in the Past 12 Months Has Been a Down Round" - The Information But that isn't a bad thing. We're sweating off the ZIRP hangover. Valuations are correcting. ServiceTitan, Reddit, and CoreWeave are all trading up. Circle, Figma, Klarna are next.

Venture is one of those industries where there is a negative correlation between information and consensus. There's an obvious ~1%, but are extremely competitive to invest in. The remaining ~99% are non-consensus bets. The best VCs can separate signal from noise in the ~99%.

Big tech’s AI land grab has begun. Snowflake <> Crunchy Data ($250M) IBM <> Seek AI Salesforce <> Moobhub (acquihire), Informatica ($8B), and Converganceai I expect more M&A deals before 2025 is done.

In venture, the role of a GP generally fits into a few buckets. Source, pick, win, and help. At the earliest stages (pre-seed), an argument can be made that sourcing and winning are implicitly linked. Competition is limited if you’re the first check into an early founder bet.

While we wait for exit markets to heat up again, employee tender offers will increasingly become more important to retain/reward top talent at private companies. Anthropic's recent tender of up to 20%/$2M is one example. I predict we'll see more of these before 2025 is over.

Recently spoke with a later-stage investor who noted that w/out the mega-AI deals in Q1 2025, median round sizes and valuations were mostly flat or down. Recent PitchBook data confirms this.

Turns out YC and the US Gov have pretty similar unicorn hit rates (at least for $5B+ vals). According to @PitchBook and Commonweal VC the US Gov is in 25% of venture backed unicorns. The data below looks at $5B+ valuations, so not quite a 1:1 comp, but still interesting.
