Two women judges retired this year. Ms. Bela Trivedi and Ms. Shalinder Kaur. Both fiercely independent who did everything to protect civil liberties and uphold constitutional values. Indian judges don't retire; they use judicial careers as launchpad for soaring to new heights

Bar associations need to take a firm position on Delhi High Court's absolutely perverse order on denial of bail to political prisoners. Opposition and civil society need to be out on the streets. Only reasoned judgments derive legitimacy & command obedience, not judicial diktats

Today's bail order in case of political prisoners like Umar Khalid, others is another reminder that Constitution and courts created under it aren't enough to save a democracy from authoritarian forces. These days we have judges who pass orders not on principles but phone calls

Like I said last night, our constitutional courts aren't the sentinel we want them to be. Liberty is state's plaything & Courts are enablers. State can lock up Muslims for years on bogus charges with no trial in sight because judges lack spine to stand up & apply first principles

All boys club - despite dissent by only woman judge on court - welcoming another male judge. A judge-made rule means judges can show "thenga" to accountability. Democracy is told to trust the wisdom of judges. Take Collegium, in-house disciplinary procedure, post-bench plum posts
