True UNIX confessions: I’ve never used tar to write to or read from a tape drive directly.
@bsdunix4ever I have used tar with vax 9-track and QIC-6150, 6250 and 6525. I don’t really miss it. Also, I still have Dell SVR4 Unix tapes somewhere. Yes, that Dell. Totally not a pack rat.
@bsdunix4ever I have, but only when testing them for later use with Bacula.
@bsdunix4ever Raises hand. This has suddenly turned in to *nix never have I ever
@bsdunix4ever @allanjude I don't think I've ever used a tape drive.
@bsdunix4ever Ever booted a Sun3 or Sun4 from tape? :)
@bsdunix4ever I have, but I could never figure out how to enable compression. I read something about minor device numbers, but it didn't seem to work. Maybe the drive just did compression automatically?
@bsdunix4ever I have and I've even used cpio to do the same. Even used dd to pull archive data and translate it back in the day :-)
