If you listen carefully, you can hear a crackling sound coming from this tree trunk. I think it is the sound of the wood fibres slowly pulling apart, creating these cracks in the trunk. I've never heard anything like this from a tree. #eucalypt #thicktrunktuesday

@VicRoads The trees don't appear on the @cityofballarat exceptional tree register - possibly because they are on a road reserve which denotes the boundary with Golden Plains Shire. Too late for @EucalyptAus National #Eucalypt Day, but these are special trees beside Winter Creek, on SE boundary of @cityofballarat , snapped this week. Tree by itself is, we think, a candlebark. Tree on the left in other pic is likely a hybrid between snow gum & Yarra gum. /2

Once they were giants.... PhD candidate @chloebentze @UniversitySA is finding very few old growth stands of stringybark #eucalypt #trees in her fieldwork on #dieback in South Australia. Most stands were logged some 100 (+/-) years ago. With @DonnaFitz23
