Finishing 2024 with one more research result! We’ve trained small language agents to do hard sci tasks: engineering proteins, manipulating DNA, and working with sci literature in a new library called Aviary. We beat humans and frontier LLMs on these tasks!
Lab automation in academia is a completely different beast because the amount of funding is much lower, the turnover rate prevents institutional knowledge from accumulating, and the diversity of experiments is much higher.
One way to fix this is to leverage the higher openness to sharing information in academia. I want to create a network of academics who are trying to use automation so that we can share ideas with each other. Custom hardware engineering can bring costs down tremendously.
