As of Friday, the S&P 500 posted four consecutive gains of at least 1%, accomplished only four previous times in 85 years. The S&P 500 advanced a median of 17.0% six months later. One year later, it gained a median of 27.5%. A limited number of data points, but interesting.

For the past 3 sessions, a minimum of 80% of NYSE issues advanced, and 80% of volume went into those issues. That's happened twice before in the past 80 years. The 1st kicked off the mid-80s bull market. The 2nd kicked off the 2009 bull market.

This was one of the largest 1-day % gains in indexes, on one of the worst-ever breadth readings for such a large up day. Sounds like a negative. The few precedents say no. Returns were far better here than when breadth was overwhelmingly positive.

Our $SPY optimism index's 10 day average is extremely low. Sentiment is close to MAXIMUM pessimism. The last 10 times optimism towards U.S. equities was this extreme, $SPY and the S&P 500 rallied 100% of the time over the next 2 months.
