Why does this matter? Buybacks shrink the supply of shares in the market. That pushes prices higher and boosts earnings-per-share mechanically, even if profits don’t grow. This effect is so large that since 2011, 27% of all S&P 500 returns have come directly from buybacks.
Apple and Alphabet alone announced $100 billion and $70 billion. JPMorgan, Goldman Sachs, Wells Fargo, and Bank of America each pledged $40 billion or more. Nvidia just added another $60 billion. Corporations cannot get enough of their own stock.
