Last week I attempted to make goulash for meal prep but it ended up tasting more like a mexican salsa beef stew. There was extra sauce remaining that I put on top of some air-fried schitzels + cheese: a mexican chicken parma? Hmmmm. 🤔 Just needed some jalapenos to top it off.

Spitballing an Idea: Podcast/video series where guests are adults with dyscalculia on, have them share their experience (if psychologically safe to do so) and I (or an experienced maths educator) teaches them something about maths related to something they're interested in.

Random Reading Academic Papers Grumble: When I'm reading a (math bio) paper about a method that works, and they show graphs/analysis etc. that prove it, I've realised that I also need to know what such graphs/analyses are NOT supposed to look like to really have it sink in.

This past week I've been doing a bit more helping drop-in students do maths on whiteboards and I've missed this feeling so much: minimal reliance on a laptop (looking something up or checking the question); both students and I are engrossed with and talking about the maths 😊

Was wondering about dyslexia in e.g. Chinese, Japanese, where they use characters instead of English script to write. Turns out it does exist, but because language processing for e.g. English vs Chinese is different (via brain scans), dyslexia in one doesn't imply the other.

Getting a bit frustrated at one (international) student who on multiple occasions I've asked him to speak up because he mumbles, even pointed out my hearing aid. Still no change in the volume of his voice. Not when i ask him to repeat something 3+ times, even. ARGH!

I find it amusing that at the local Woolies there'll usually be some random toothpaste on sale, but if I go to the usual toothpaste shelf and look right at the bottom there's the standard mint (which I like) toothpaste which is still cheaper per 100g 😂

Finally finished a shawl I'd been crocheting to use up a bunch of 8ply yarn that someone gave my mother who then gave it to me. Definitely some mistakes, but glad this one is done. One less mental burden/guilt!

Just asked ChatGPT about why people dislike folding laundry because it's like, the perfect task for me when I know I need to let my brain idle/churn on its own for a bit after doing concentrated work (as part of my PhD). Same goes for any physical housework, really.

Today I figured out that it's viable for me to WFH in the morning, then come into work in the afternoon so that I have energy to stay after hours so I can practice cello in the evening in my office after checking the building's sufficiently empty. Yay for more cello practice!

I've completed another mental rotation of: "Hmm, I'm a bit unruffled." 1-2 weeks later... "Oh it's because I haven't completed a bunch of small projects I started and my subconscious is weakly annoying me about it. Better make a conscious attempt to finish them now!" UGH

I wish I hadn't looked up how to hand-make rugs (blame Instagram ads) because now I want to make one in the shape of the aperiodic hat tile but I know there'll be issues with the square/grid mesh and it not quite being correct on various diagonal slants/corners 💢
