Peter H Wolff introduced the concept of behavioural states in early infancy. State 4 a quiet alert state, during this stage the eyes are wide open. If your baby is sensory sensitive they may only need a small amount of interaction. Pause, watch their cues, grade sensory input.
In utero a fetus sleeps for up to 18 hours a day. In NICU this can be very challenging as preterm infants do not have the skills to habituate to sensory input. A healing environment is essential to promote sleep and grow healthy brain architecture.
Any sudden sensory input is very overwhelming. Before any interaction first talk and then touch and then move. Observe the baby, respond to their cues. Relationship based care is neuroprotective care.
Tummy time is a multi-sensory experience that develops balance, head control, visual tracking, auditory processing, fun and play. tummy time begins in your parents loving arms and progresses to independent forearm propping.
