Honored to write for @ASMEdotorg on how the legacy of the steam boiler helped inspire Boiler 2.0 and @AtmosZeroSteam's mission.
Thanks to Louise Poirier, @JwintersA for their editorial support & the invitation.

We’ve all seen this meme countless times, but this one has to be the ur-version.
From: Millard Barton, “Integrated Design Analysis” in Space Technology (Howard Seifert, editor), John Wiley, 1959.
If I was making a list of the hardest things for technological civilization to accomplish, "building a new commercial jet engine" would be very near the top.
This week on Construction Physics, I look at what makes it so difficult.

The man with the white coat, second row, fourth from the left is Gerhard Damköhler who proposed the famous dimensionless number. In this Nature Chemical Engineering paper I celebrate his legacy. Enjoy this full-text view-only version of the paper:

I enjoyed many chapters in this book that has a lucid coverage of hot topics like NH3, H2 combustion as well as conversation devices - ICE’s, GT’s and FC’s. Previously when grad. students asked for resources I would point to disjoint papers & books. Now there is a one-stop-shop

$7,500/kg launch costs to LEO essentially blows the competition out of the water. Here is a figure from an AIAA (2004-3562) paper that shows pre-SpaceX costs. Estimates in the paper are $22,000/kg for manned and $11,000/kg for unmanned (2002 $)

This reminds me of IC engines in early 20th century UK where the bore < stroke because automobile taxes were based on the piston diameter and not the stroke length. For fast speeds, good volumetric eff., etc. you need the opposite, bore > stroke

This beautiful chart shows that C2’s are a precursor to manufacturing a variety of plastics, yet its not obvious if this can be done with CH4 as the feed. I had the pleasure of working with SABIC on this years ago, and we demonstrated this in the lab:

Exciting powertrain concept from Bill Green's group at @MITChemE for utilizing LOHCs. In early 1900s automobiles, gasifiers/reactors were part of the powertrain. Fast forward to 2023, this provides new options for H2 utilization
