Joe was a wonderful man, who was one of the first distance coaches I knew to really integrate science with coaching. I'll never forget how right before the 2006 #LondonMarathon he showed me a VO2 max graph which indicated that Deena Kastor could break 2:20. She ran 2:19:36.

If this 10k wasn’t a great example of why commercial breaks during distance races is a bad idea I don’t know what is. Viewers got to see the race develop and contenders battle ahead of the final crucial moves. 26 minutes of uncut drama. That’s distance running.

Learn the name Habtom Samuel. PBs of 13:13/27:20. 17th at World XC this year for Eritrea (18 seconds ahead of Ky Robinson). Just ran 23:36 at Roy Griak. For comparison, Conner Mantz/Wesley Kiptoo ran 23:53/23:54 there in 2021.

Cross Country is a great metaphor for life. From the outside, it looks like an individual sport. A bunch of people running their own race. But in reality, it's a team sport. The sooner we embrace the team aspect, the better we perform, and the more joy and connection we create.

If you go to the gym to improve your physical shape you're applauded and seen as dedicated. If you seek out a therapist to work on your mental shape, you should be seen in the same way, dedicated and strong. Let's normalize working on ourselves.
