I failed as a runner for decades.
But in the last 8 years I’ve run 9,000+ miles and 7 ultramarathons by making a few simple changes (that you can do too).
Here are 10 tips to bulletproof your running:
There’s a drive that we all need to get through the tough times when facing a challenge.
It may be to get through the last mile of a race. Or to complete another day of training.
Make the drive is personal and meaningful, it’s impossible to slow down.
I ran 4 mi today. Keeping it light as I recover from the marathon.
It feels good.
But my body is telling me it’s time to get back to the gym. I put strength training off for the past 2 weeks - the week before and after the marathon.

I ran my first marathon last week. 3 minutes shy of qualifying for Boston.
I never thought I could run that far or that fast.
I kept pace with people 15 years younger than me.

I’ve struggled with anxiety and depression.
I got back into exercising seriously about 5 years ago. Running mostly.
There’s something about the sweating and deep breathing that relaxes me.
And then there’s the endorphin high.
Find your motivation. It’s out there.

I hit a low point 6 years ago.
It sucked. But it’s had some benefits.
I’m now exercising 4-5 days/week.
I ran my first marathon on Sunday. And I feel great!
When I was 20, my father became a quadriplegic from a bicycle accident. He was only 53.
Cancer took my brother-in-law at age 42.
I’m 48.
I know that time isn’t always on your side.
