Bought my first Hikari Tsushin ($9435.T) shares today. It makes sense as a way to gain diversified exposure to Japan as an outsider. Additionally my portfolio is now large enough that It's not too large a position because of round lots (minimum purchase sizes in Japan)
What strikes me is the group think. Why are there no outliers among the large endowments? No one who resisted the herding into privates? A huge correlated mistake by the smartest minds in the investing business

Great article. What are the other cheap, sleepy businesses from OTC land would've made you rich over the years? LAACO was ~15% CAGR for 50 years w/ dividends. Monarch Cement was $10mm market cap in 1970. Now ~$1 billion. Lord knows how many dividends received along the way.

investment process: read and pass on ideas quickly until you spot something good, cheap, and/or unusual enough to make you say “huh?” out loud → then dig deeper to see what this anomaly is about

JP staples seem pretty cheap, but Glico seems more poorly run than Morinaga or Meiji. Operating margins are quite poor and U.S. growth is meh. They're growing in China though. Morinaga is just much cheaper and has growing topline in 3 & 5yr periods (vs neg for Glico)

Interesting that Hikari Tsushin has been buying more Hotel reservation SaaS Temairazu $2477.JP. Wonder if they’ll start buying its cousin CYND $4256.JP at some point too 😆 Possibly haven’t as they look for history of profitability and CYNDs accounting earnings have been low.…
