When I wrote my book, I profiled @HariSri108, a nonspeaking #ActuallyAutistic man. People said the same things Kennedy describes here. He wound up going to Cal, graduating and is now a graduate student at Vanderbilt University.

One of my fears in coming out has been that anyone I've ever had conflict with would blame it on my being autistic. Now, I get the double-empathy problem for real. If my being autistic factored in, it's at least partly because I'm ND in an NT world. Helpful for us all to know.

When people I follow here go silent, I sometimes worry they're not feeling well. But my own silence is because I'm feeling better. My PTSD has let up. I'm adjusting to the label. I don't need to read or think about autism all the time. Maybe I'm more ready just to *be* autistic.

My job featured an autistic speaker today. The speaker was SO GARISHLY GRIM, I wanted to hold up all my awards & tout all my accomplishments & generally be a jerk & then go eat steak by myself. None of which I ever do. IT'S NOT ALL TERRIBLE FOR ME. GEEZ. 🤦

Agree, yes, let's do more with neurodiversity! So often, too often, the critique amounts to: "Stop talking about that and start pathologizing yourself again." Surely, that is not the way forward. More action, more voices, better lives for more people, feels exactly right.

For me, realizing I'm autistic, connecting w/the community & starting to come out all depended on the lowering the barrier of stigma. I needed the RX of self-understanding. Once the stigma dropped enough that I could climb over it to understanding, I did. At speed. Words matter.

Getting ready for work, thinking to myself: If my company had any idea how much autistic staffers are doing for them, including at rather high levels of the operation, they'd search LinkedIn for anyone with "autistic" in their profiles. And ADHD. And and and. They need us.
