Istio ambient is often seen as just "service mesh without sidecars". It is that, but it also solves a ton of pain points in Istio. One of many things you won't need to worry about: securing all Prometheus scraping: blog.howardjohn.info/posts/securing…. With ambient, it just works.
Our slack bot now looks an incoming alerts from @IstioMesh metrics, and compares them to relationships defined in @kubernetesio network policies to find relationships between isolated alerts. Here you can see it rename an active incident channel because of that relationship.

@IstioMesh The biggest deal in Istio 1.22 is Ambient! You'll get the whole Istio experience with Ambient in single-cluster setups. L4 and some L7 features (waypoints and basic deployment topologies) are expected to be in Beta!

Architecturally @IstioMesh does a great job of adapter: integrating with @kubernetesio natively by watching its CRDs, translating them and pushing them via @EnvoyProxy 's data plane via xDS. The beauty of it: neither k8s and envoy realized otherwise.
