And to my friends on the left, talking to someone is not an indication of universal agreement. It’s an indication that we have started to become America again, where we actually have conversations about our opinions. And we do it without hating each other.

When I ask for decency, I hear the same from left and right: “Why should I care about decency?” [When “they” are so awful.] So many people not caring about decency is how we get constant indecency.

I recommend remembering how you've been wrong, how your views have changed, how you may still be wrong in various ways. This will keep you open to change and make you more discerning and less self-righteous.

Talk to a smart person from the other side, and you'll probably learn that they're nothing like the image you've constructed. They might have some good points, but it's also great if you walk away thinking, “yep, that opinion is nuts, but that guy was actually pretty cool.”

I think about these charts quite a bit. If you want to know why people often freak out when you talk about crossing party lines, they're operating under false impressions about the other side. People consistently think their opponents are more extreme than they really are /1

I saw this when I served in the California Army National Guard while living in San Francisco. A friend in the Guard once asked me if I got harassed while wearing my uniform in San Francisco. In the real San Francisco, people thanked me for my service - the same as anywhere else.
