@dysclinic When patients ask ‘Will I get better’ they usually actually mean *properly better* ie cured & able to have a normal life. This is very unlikely with MECFS. But drs do need to try all the meds that often help, making it clear improvement will likely be modest. + relapses happen.
@dysclinic Not sure what’s worse. I’ve been told both by different doctors. One said this is permanent and another said you’ll be better in 2 or 3 years, which was 6 years ago. Perhaps there’s a middle ground where doctors say there’s no cure, but let’s try to improve your QoL.
@dysclinic Patients need to be able to make decisions around attempting to continue working, living arrangements & finances. Trotting out hope for improvement while not telling patients this is a life changing illness is a cruelty beyond measure. ‼️Facts not paternalism. ‼️ #MedTwitter
@dysclinic I was told I’d recover. That was really damaging because I didn’t plan for my future. I always thought I‘d recover and it was a blip. That was in 2000. I’d have preferred the truth. Some patients improve, some stay the same, some decline and some recover. But no one knows who.
@dysclinic I would be very cautious around any health professional who confidently tells a person with ME they WILL get better. This suggests a lack of understanding of the condition. Though absolutely there are things to try that could improve quality of life.
@dysclinic I would have preferred my doctors were honest instead of dismissing it as basically nothing for decades. I was a child when I got sick and didn't know it was a serious disease. If I had known I would likely not be as severe as I am now.
@dysclinic No, most of us wish that drs were actually honest about prognosis while still trying experimental treatments. Most of us are told that we'll get better over time and then are shocked and completely unprepared when that doesn't happen. We don't need false hope
@dysclinic It is highly likely that people with ME/CFS won't get better. It's productive to be honest so that they don't push and get worse, and they can put in place disability supports. It's often more depressing to falsely chase a cure that doesn't exist than to accept your disability.
@dysclinic I wish I had been told it was likely to be lifelong, but that I might see some improvements along the way. Or that it might be remission/relapsing. I had no clue. I assumed I’d be better in a few weeks.
