So, one of our experienced carpenters has said she can’t find daycare for her two kids and is moving from Vancouver to the island. A big loss
This should be a raised crosswalk. That continuous sidewalks aren’t the default speaks volumes about how seriously the city takes “vision zero”.

And now we're looking at a /minimum/ of 8 years in which the city has failed to make meaningful progress on funding and building out the sort of bike network that would support real mode shift. Meanwhile, other cities are charging ahead, eg cbc.ca/news/canada/mo…

the plan to widen Beach Avenue so that some people can rat-run through the West End more readily is basically vandalism.
Seems pretty clear that the only part that ABC cared about was re-introducing two way car traffic to Stanley Park, even though that will increase car traffic and rat running and makes a bike lane in Stanley Park itself one day less likely. Another grim vote from Ken Sim's party
While I appreciate this sentiment, also important to note that the Water St pilot is only 1 block + 1 square (couldn't even do the whole street), only 2 months, and when given the opportunity to *consider* extending to Sept, Meisnzer & all of ABC said 'yeah, no thanks'.

Politicians doing sports playoff wagers is such a played out pre-social-media bit. Modern times need real stakes, how about something like "if the Oilers win, Vancouver has to zone one new subsidized rental building with preferential selection to Edmonton expats."
I’m actually pretty happy that something @Vote4ABC started is happening! It would be great if we didn’t have to make trade offs, but parking lots are expensive to maintain, so this is a good step. dailyhive.com/vancouver/vanc…

Did you know TransLink won't even be able to increase frequency in rush hours for at least two years? We desperately need more bus lanes *now*, which will allow us to better use the buses we already have. Faster bus=more capacity, less overcrowding

My favourite thing about the BMO is for a brief moment 18000 people experience how livable, quiet, and clean a car-free downtown would be.
"Fundamentally, lower local speed limits are internationally endorsed as a crucial element in reducing road casualties." A clear message from @PACTS on the need and popularity of 20mph and 30km/h limits pacts.org.uk/the-need-for-2…
Stellar video outlining why @20splentyforus. Glad that @Vote4ABC supported @PtFry's motion to move more of @CityofVancouver to 30 km/h, hope staff come back with a reasonable implementation plan so we don't lag further behind in creating safer streets. youtube.com/watch?v=JRbnBc…

we desperately need more bus lanes @CityofVancouver @MovementYVR this bus is completely full. I always laugh when I see “the greenest city” because it really is a joke, there are so many easy and cheap climate solutions that should have been implemented years ago

"The City of Vancouver is also outside the top 100 globally for all-round cycling friendliness." Would love to see @BoardofTrade help push the city to build some AAA infrastructure outside downtown, given their influence rejecting them on Broadway. Any plans?

@PtFry Those were also 3 years of my life. The West End Waterfront Advisory Group had no authority, but we did have a passion to do our best to get the best possible result. Today's amendments eviscerated those efforts.
I wonder what they're saying in the definitely doesn't exist and we have no records of it group chat.
The city just banned the legal sale of torches
Vancouver, once a global leader in green infrastructure, seems to be rolling back the legacy. In this case, ABC council rejected waterfront parks plan EXCEPT for one idea: bring more cars into Stanley Park. Get ready for lots more traffic in the West End!
Well, it's official. ABC has killed the "West End Waterfront Parks, Beaches, and Transportation Vision", but is re-introducing two way car traffic to Beach Ave west of Denman. Note that Bligh voted against B the restoring-two-way-car traffic part!
So, one of our experienced carpenters has said she can’t find daycare for her two kids and is moving from Vancouver to the island. A big loss
This also includes half a million dollars for the VPD to implement a volunteer-driven snitch program to suss out who might be troublesome.
Vancouver's popular Alcohol on Beaches Pilot is returning! This Summer, residents will once again be allowed to responsibly consume alcohol on many Vancouver beaches. Improvements for 2024 include more garbage/recycling bins and better signage. vancouver.ca/news-calendar/…
We are lighting up blue and green and have the Canucks flag raised in Civic Plaza, how are you cheering on the team? x.com/lindacbuchanan…
We've raised the Canucks flag in @CityOfNorthVan Civic Plaza! This isn't just about cheering for a Game 6 win, it's about uniting as a city under one banner, igniting the passion within every fan, and embodying the spirit of resilience that defines our team and community.
Last minute changes from @Vote4ABC to prioritize two-way vehicle traffic on Beach Ave (west of Denman). And punt the best parts of the plan (public washrooms, well lit public spaces, accessible pathways to the water) down the road. That's the opposite of what ppl asked for. 😩
Boyle speaking eloquently about the poor governance of bringing such a huge amendment without notice to other councilors (presumably ABC councilors saw this though), how this is inconsistent with the city's climate and active transpo goals. She's right!
And now we're looking at a /minimum/ of 8 years in which the city has failed to make meaningful progress on funding and building out the sort of bike network that would support real mode shift. Meanwhile, other cities are charging ahead, eg cbc.ca/news/canada/mo…
Yup. I think a lot of Vancouverites grew complacent with our rep as a leading city on active transpo. But: -our last mayor/council was divided & dysfunctional, and didn't fund bike lanes -our current mayor/council is hostile to bike lanes And now we're moving backwards.
@pwaldkirch evidently elections have consequences longform: the Vision Vancouver vision for the city was never some new status quo or enduring political alignment, it was precariously perched and needed considerable electoral strategy, compromise and luck
Yes, ABC just voted specifically to kill keeping one-way vehicle traffic into Stanley Park. Two way car traffic on Beach Ave is coming back, along with more rat-running and car traffic. This also hurts the chances of a bike lane in Stanley Park in the future.
the plan to widen Beach Avenue so that some people can rat-run through the West End more readily is basically vandalism.
Credit to @christineeboyle @PtFry @AdrianeCarr and @rebeccaleebligh who voted in opposition and who made excellent comments in the council chamber.
Very disappointed in today's outcome, which removed everything good from the West End plan and only resulted in more cars on Beach Ave. Many speakers noting how bad this is for safety & climate - and will cost millions in taxpayer money when we have so many other urgent issues.
Well, it's official. ABC has killed the "West End Waterfront Parks, Beaches, and Transportation Vision", but is re-introducing two way car traffic to Beach Ave west of Denman. Note that Bligh voted against B the restoring-two-way-car traffic part!
This is a huge step backwards for the city, one of several deliberate steps ABC has taken to ignore or even increase the physical risks for me and my family when moving around town.
Well, it's official. ABC has killed the "West End Waterfront Parks, Beaches, and Transportation Vision", but is re-introducing two way car traffic to Beach Ave west of Denman. Note that Bligh voted against B the restoring-two-way-car traffic part!

They just recessed, but from comments & amendments from Kirby-Yung & Meiszner the writing is on the wall: -the overall West End beach & transportation plan will be scrapped, it's too expensive; -two way car traffic on Beach Ave west of Denman into Stanley Park will be restored
Boyle's amendment is killed. We have confirmation that this change will remove green space along the beach as a new pedestrian path is built and the bike lane is moved over to accommodate more traffic. It'll also cost a total of $16 million (6 from engineering).
Going to miss your voice of reason on Council so much @christineeboyle.
