Just because you hold a position of leadership, this does not mean that people will gladly & confidently follow you. Holding a title or a position does not mean that we have developed the skills to lead, influence or attract people. There's so much more to it than this.
Something didn't go well... so what? Fumbling around, looking silly, being wrong, feeling clumsy & "failing large" aren't exactly sensations that we all enjoy. What matters more is how do we re-enter the situation after these things happen? Gotta get back in. Re-enter.
I don't have much tolerance for people who adopt the attitude of helplessness. I don't accept the phrase "There's nothing I can do about it." There's always another way. Taking action is a choice - so is doing nothing. Helplessness is exhausting & a killer of culture.
Do not be fooled by the people who work for you or work with you... Are these folks: problem creators, problem spotters or problem solvers? Become highly aware of the problem creators & problem spotters. They require a different approach than the problem solvers.
What I learned this week: sometimes, small things make big impressions. I inherently know this, but needed to be reminded. What I see as "something small or not a big deal" can be a massive deal to the person I'm speaking with. Impact vs intention. Reminder received ✔️.

The following question is always on my mind when I am trying to work through something challenging or complex: « What am I not seeing? » If I can figure this out, it usually leads to progress & then solutions. No more lost sleep or wasted time + energy. Q: What don’t I see?
I’m a big believer that environment dictates performance. Who you’re talking with, sitting with, working with and learning from matters tremendously. Find a way to put yourself in those situations. Find a way to “get in the room”. Watch. Listen. Learn.
Owning & operating businesses is dang hard. No need to elaborate further. That's it. If you've never done it, this tweet won't resonate. If you have done it, or if you are doing it - I'm 99% certain that you'll know exactly what I'm saying here. Dang hard.
It’s a skill to stay out of a “no-win” conversation. For example, you know the person who lives to argue & cause conflict… This person will try to convince you that 2+2=5. Great! Have fun. Smile. Nod. Walk away with no response. This is a skill.
Something that I still find so puzzling : when people use the phrase "overnight success". This is rarely the case. Look closer. Dig deeper. Analyze more critically. Study the backstory - I can almost guarantee you that it's there. For me, this is what's most valuable.
Something that I see as a valuable asset - getting comfortable with rejection. This applies to kids & adult alike. If you don’t ask, you don’t get. This takes practice & getting more comfortable with taking the risk. If you don’t ask, you don’t get.
One of the most considerate & helpful things that I can do as an advisor / coach is to hand my client off to someone more qualified - if I can’t help them. There are occasions where I am not the right professional or I am not the best fit. It can’t be personal. It’s the right…
You don't need to have a live-in nanny to have smooth mornings with your kids. You can achieve this with a few common sense ideas that are well planned & well executed. Don't underestimate how a chaotic morning can derail a big part of the day for your kids.
Unhelpful thought: "I'm dreading how (insert kid name here) will behave today". Reframe: " I'm expecting rocky behavior from Kid X today. I know exactly how I will need to support her today". Massively different in how we prepare to support our most vulnerable kids.
Kids need some practice + exposure to uncertainty. In small doses, this is helpful. It helps with anxiety. We won't always know "what or when it will happen" or "who it will be". There are times when this won't be in our control. Uncertainty exposure crushes anxiety.
Setting expectations… Kid supervision & Adult supervision. Sometimes it all blends together!
Resilient kids learn how to stumble, reassess & move forward. They understand that backing up to move forward is a step - not an outcome. They are ok with scrapping all or part of their current plan to start over. Trial & error is natural sequence for them.
Sometimes, our kids can get the better of us. We’re human. When they backtalk to us, it’s hard to always keep our composure. Adults who back talk to their kids are modelling the exact opposite response that we’re trying to teach. Give yourself a minute. Regroup.

My big recent focus is having zero “input” in the first two hours of the day. • No music • No phone • No reading From 5 to 7 AM, just a keyboard & pen to process all of the ideas in my head before I let in the ideas of someone else. Massive mental clarity as a result.

Please don't remove students from physical education, music, Arts, or other classes to remediate them in other areas. These classes are just as important for overall education and may be their favorite classes and one reason they like school.
