Viola Smith born this day 1912 Wisconsin. One of the first female professional drummers, she worked extensively from the 1920s to 1975 & fought barriers facing women musicians. At 106 she’s still drumming in the Costa Mesa, CA Forever Young Band. Here in 1940 with her Coquettes.

I feel sorry for Netflix era kids. They will never know the high stakes adrenaline of running to the bathroom/fridge/bedroom in a single ad break, with the beckoning call of a sibling screaming “It’s ONNNNNN” to send you hurdling over furniture to get back in time.
