It's out! We find that (1) protesters are less likely to mount a major nonviolent uprising against dictatorships with personalized security forces, (2) personalized security forces are more likely to repress realized protest, and (3) shape the prospects for democratization.

My study appears in the current issue of @cps_journal. This study finds that dictators spend more on redistributive policy in election periods, and that citizens’ evaluations of government redistribution also fluctuate according to the electoral cycle. journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10.11…

Happy to see the article finally published at @cps_journal! We find that as personalism increases, rival elites, less able to coordinate coup attempts, turn to strategies that do not require substantial elite coordination: assassinations.
