Telegram is basically unencrypted. Group chats aren’t encrypted, and most 1-on-1 aren’t either. So: 1) Durov’s arrest likely wasn’t for offering encrypted chats 2) Nor to coerce access to encrypted chats 3) But Telegram's operators can see vast logs of unencrypted messages.

I hope there is more push-back against these dangerous conspiracy theories (that implicitly give credence to even more elaborate and crazy ones doing rounds). Many folks seem to be living in a "house of cards" world, but in all likelihood, the explanation is really this simple.

So the "likes" are now exactly like "bookmarks" except that the tweeter(?) sees that I liked their post (vs not for bookmarks). That seems pointless and we have lost a super-important signal. Hope folks will start retweeting what they like...
