Thermal Bridging: when heat is allowed to pass through an assembly due to a part of it being more conductive than the materials around it. ex. In wall assemblies at the wall stud where insulation isn't continuous.
Inclusionary Zoning: (abbr. IZ) A zoning policy at the municipal level that promotes either voluntary or mandated inclusion of affordable housing in new developments. For example, when an apartment building is proposed, a certain % of units must be affordable
Affordable Housing: In Canada, according the CMHC (Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation), a unit is considered "affordable" if the family unit spends no more than 30% of their before tax income on rent and utilities such as hydro.
Massing Study: a study where architects look at the physical shape, and mass of the proposed structure, and assess whether it makes sense for the project in the context of the environment; along with shadow studies etc.
Paul Revere Williams: (b.1894-d.1980) The first Black architect in the AIA, he is known for designing houses of very wealthy and famous actors and artists of the time, including Frank Sinatra, Lucille Ball and Bill "Bojangles" Robinson.
Laminated Veneer Lumber: (aka: LVLs) an engineered wood product that uses multiple layers of thin wood assembled with adhesives. Kind of like Plywood, but much thicker and stronger. Used for headers, joists and rim boards.

Hostile Architecture: Architecture meant to keep people from loitering, or sleeping in a public location. Made with the intention to target the unhoused population, this type of public structure includes uneven surfaces, spikes, benches with dividers and other enviro designs
